Hail Nightwing! DC Announces ’The New Order’ Mini-Series

DC Comics has announced a new mini-series via Screen Rant. Nightwing: The New Order is an elseworlds story that takes place in a future where Dick Grayson is the head of a government task force that hunts down metahumans.

NIGHTWING: THE NEW ORDER is the story of a future world without “weapons”—where superpowers have been eliminated and outlawed. The man responsible? None other than Dick Grayson, a.k.a. Nightwing, now leader of a government task force called the Crusaders who are charged with hunting the remaining Supers. But when events transpire which turn the Crusaders’ aim toward Grayson’s own family, the former Boy Wonder must turn against the very system he helped create, with help from the very people he’s been hunting for years—the last metahumans of the DC Universe.

Nightwing The New Order pageKyle Higgins and Trevor McCarthy return to a character they know very well. They helped launch the New 52 Nightwing series, which was great, but was bogged down by tie-ins. They have a love and appreciation for the character that would get me excited for almost any other storyline.

Believe it or not, I’m actually enjoying Secret Empire by Marvel. I hate seeing Captain America become a Hydra agent, but I gave it a chance and it has been riveting. So I will give this a chance despite hating the thought of Dick Grayson hunting down DC heroes. Following the announcment, Higgins revealed on his Twitter that this was a story written a year and a half ago, so it’s not an answer to Secret Empire.

Though both storylines share some similarities, Higgins promises that Grayson won’t be killing people in the streets, or committing mass genocide. Still, DC is treading in waters they might not want to right now. My trust in this creative team is the major reason I didn’t start my fanboy complaining, that and this being an elseworlds story, so it’s not effecting canon.
