UPDATE: Anthony Breznican of EW is reporting that the movie will be based on the Gail Simone New 52 Batgirl run. That story features Barbara Gordon regaining the use of her legs and returning as Batgirl.
A while back we talked about what the new plan for the DC movie universe might be. After this bit of news it looks like the new plan has Warner Brothers doubling down on Batman. Variety is reporting that Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator and Avengers director, Joss Whedon, appears to be on his way to joining the DCEU:
“Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.”
Judging from the instant reaction on Twitter, it looks like some people are still gun shy with Joss Whedon after the whole Black Widow/Hulk romance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. A storyline that turned Natasha into a desperate romantic instead of an awesome spy. But to judge Whedon on one movie after years of writing amazing female characters seems unfair. This is exciting news if it comes to be.
It is odd to see another Batman related solo film being added to the schedule. Even with the delay of The Batman we are now reportedly getting a Nightwing solo, Batgirl solo, and a Gotham City Sirens film. There have also been rumors of a Teen Titans movie.
When WB finally reveal their new slate for the DC Universe it should be interesting to see how many movies are planned, and just how Bat heavy it turns out to be.
